The Country Roads Walks 2006
John Denver

Welcome to the Country Roads Walks page for 2006. We have two walks planned for this year, one in Northamptonshire, and one in Yorkshire. Please see below for all the information.

Please come and join Paul, Val, Emma and Daisy, share in our beautiful countryside, nature, wildlife and in the friendship of remembering John Denver’s life and music. He will never be forgotten.

On Saturday May 20th we will meet at 10.00 am at the Red Kite Centre, RSPB Barn, Top Lodge, in the Rockingham Forest Northamptonshire. The centre is off the A43, halfway between Corby and Stamford. The idea of the 5 mile walk is to visit the RSPB centre for information on the Red Kites and see CCTV pictures of the nesting birds. Afterwards, to do the walk and maybe spot a Red Kite hunting for food etc, see other birds and enjoy the surrounding countryside. Please see the maps below.

The Red Kite is one of our largest birds of prey, with a wingspan up to 195cm ( around 6ft 6ins)

UK Tourist Information

The second walk is a bit more ambitious and will take place in Haworth Yorkshire on Saturday July 1st for 6 miles. The idea of this walk is to show you some of the Bronte history and to go around the Worth Valley and see sites where the 1970 film The Railway Children was filmed. It is in fact the official Railway Children Walk. We will meet at 10.00am at the car park at the Haworth Church and the Bronte Parsonage Museum. The car park is situated at the top of the hill in Haworth on the B6142 to Stanbury. The B6142 is off the A629 Keighley to Halifax road. Please see the maps below

You will need to bring with you a rucksack, food and drink, strong shoes or boots and warm clothing, a weatherproof jacket or cagoule. Also a small first aid kit, pair of binoculars and don’t forget your camera. Please remember to follow the country code. It is very important to register for either or both of the walks, so we will know who’s coming on the day. We will give you our mobile number before the walks. Lets hope we have two good days in enjoying the countryside like John used to.

Over these last few years we have raised money for The Derbyshire Wildlife Trust (£235 in 2002), Cancer Research (£300 in 2005). This years project is to raise money for a bench, dedicated to John Denver, to be installed in West Norfolk. The bench will be put in the English Nature site at Dersingham Bog. Any money that is left will be donated to a local Alzheimer’s Charity.

The members of FoJD have donated £150+£38.50=£188.50 for a John Denver bench to be installed in West Norfolk. The JD bench will be put in the English Nature Reserve, Dersingham Bog, on the old sea cliffs overlooking the reserve. There will be a plaque on the bench which will read:-

DEDICATED IN CELEBRATION OF

The Life of John Denver 1943-1997

MUSICIAN and ENVIRONMENTALIST

Donated by Friends of  John Denver UK

English Nature have leased the 159 hectares (approx 400 acres) off the Queens Sandringham Royal Estate since 1990 and is off the A149 Kings Lynn to Hunstanton road at Wolferton. The main project at the reserve, with the management team and volunteers, is to remove the non-native Scots Pines, Silver Birch & Rhododendrons. To bring back the fast disappearing Heathers, Heaths and wildlife. It is very important to do this as farming, roads and industry have taken away our Heathland. In the British Isles we have a quarter of the worlds Heathland, so we must preserve this habitat. John Denver often spoke of habitat and how important it is for wildlife, mankind and the world. This SSSI reserve (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) is a prime example where we can work together in saving the worlds habitat & wildlife for now and future generations.

Boy From The Country

Because he called the forest "Brother"
Because he calls the Earth his mother
They drove him out into the rain
Some people even said the boy from the country was insane
Because he spoke to fish in the creek
He tried to tell us that the animals could speak
Who knows? Perhaps they do
How do you know they don't just because they've never spoken to you?
Boy from the country
Left his home when he was young
Boy from the country
He loves the sun.
He tried to tell us we should love the land
We just turned our heads and laughed; you see we did not understand
Sometimes I think the boy from the country is the only one who sees
'Cause the boy from the country doesn't want to see the forest for the trees.
Boy from the country
Left his home when he was young
Boy from the country
He loves the sun.
